3 steps to better marketing

Marketing. It's something every business needs to think about in order to be taken seriously. But you don't need to be told this - you already know it. That's why you have an attractive, functional, informative Web site. It's why you're armed with an assortment of brochures promoting your product or service. It's the reason your logo is on any item that might end up in the hands of a potential client: business cards, letterhead, and miscellaneous items like notepads, pens, and giant plastic paper clips.

Wait a minute…what's that? You don't? It's not? It isn't? Hmmm. We should talk about this marketing thing, then. We'll start with how important it is to have a variety of materials that work together to promote your business.

It's common knowledge that every business needs to have a Web site. But just because technology has provided an outlet for marketing opportunities 24/7 doesn't mean we should give up on "old school" methods. Print items (flyers, brochures, signage) are far from obsolete — and they can be key marketing tools when used effectively.

There are about as many ways to reach out to potential clients as there are fish in the sea. If you haven't done so already, now's the time to evaluate your current marketing strategies. Here are 3 tips to help you get started.

Tip#1 - Review current marketing collateral.
Consider the objective of each item. Does your newsletter feature articles guaranteed to grab you’re your target audience's attention? Can visitors easily find the information they're looking for on your Web site? Most importantly, are you getting some sort of response (click thrus on site links, phone calls asking for more information, traffic in your store)because of your marketing efforts? More on this in a second. Make sure your collateral is working for and not against you by determining exactly what message you want each item to convey.

Tip #2 – Make sure all materials are in sync.
When marketing materials are streamlined, everything works together to help brand your business. Make sure your company name and logo appears on everything from invoices to coffee mugs. Double check to see that important information hasn't changed (address, phone numbers, product or service information, etc.). If outdated info appears on anything, pitch it. It's worth it to put a portion of your marketing dollars towards keeping any item that may be seen by the public updated and accurate.
