Many people dream of starting their own business. They long for the day they can work for themselves instead of someone else. They see others doing it and ask themselves, "How hard can it be?" In reality, most new businesses do not succeed. In order to increase the likelihood of your succeeding, you will need to carefully consider every aspect of that business before you start. Here are five criteria you should filter your choices through before deciding which is the right business for you.
1. Competition - Think about who your competition will be. Are there already a number of established businesses that do the same or similar work as you intend to do? If so, how do you plan to differentiate yourself from them? If you cannot, you will have a hard time unless there is more than enough business to let you make a profit as well. Even if this is the case, and such a scenario is not likely, you should still find a way to be different but still profitable. If this will not work, consider doing something else. Starting a business is hard enough, without having to go head-to-head with already entrenched players.
2. Cash Flow - You may think it a bit premature to be thinking about cash flow so early in the decision process but that would be a mistake. These two little words are the reason most businesses fail. If you start out with less money than you need, you will have cash flow problems from the start. If your business depends on people paying as soon as you send them a bill, what will happen if they take forever to pay, or even worse, do not pay at all? What if your business grows faster or slower than you thought it would? Do you have enough money to survive as long as it takes to start making money? Remember that many businesses do not start making money for months or even years. What is your backup plan if this happens to you? You absolutely must consider all the cash flow possibilities of any business you are thinking of starting.
3. Potential Customers/Clients - Ask yourself the following: Who are your potential clients? How many of them are out there? How are they satisfying their need for your product or service right now? And, why would they buy from you? If you are unable to come up with satisfactory answers to any of these, you need to rethink your business choice.
4. Future Growth Prospects - Time to break out your crystal ball. Where do you see your business in five years? In ten years? Society changes at a rapid pace and many businesses have disappeared because they did not or could not change with it. Also, give some thought to the economy. If we go through a severe recession or depression, will enough people still want to purchase your products to keep you in business? Do you plan to offer more than one product or service? If not, how will you adapt if your market dries up?
5. Will You Enjoy Doing This Long-Term? - Really think about this last one. Will you enjoy doing the same thing for years and years? You may love to do tile work right now, but I guarantee, by the time you are finishing your twentieth bathroom, if you do not really enjoy it, you will be praying for the day you never pick up another tile. You have certainly heard the advice to find something you enjoy doing, which is still true, just remember to imagine doing it professionally for others and then decide if you will still enjoy it.
Starting your own business can be a wonderful and rewarding experience but only if you select the right business to go into in the first place. Such an important decision deserves a well thought-out plan and part of that plan should include consideration of the above five items. If the business you have in mind still looks good after that, you just may be on the right path to that rewarding experience.
