Getting Started Early

In today's economy, more and more companies are hiring permanent/temporary employees rather than full time long-term employees. As their business cycles and fluctuates, people are added and dropped from the payroll on a regular basis.

For the forty-something employee, this can create significant hardship not only financially but also to their family structure. Their spouse may have an established career, but for the laid-off spouse a new job could mean a whole new geographic location.

Frequently the laid-off employee will take their severance package and attempt to start a business. Sadly, many of these businesses fail because the entrepreneur was unprepared for the challenges of running, managing and leading their own company. The problem is they have failed to view their business as their business and in reality are buying themselves another job.

The secret is this - dig your well before you are thirsty. If you have a job, start planning and growing your business now - write your business plan, determine your financing, develop your marketing strategies, and network your leadership team.

Most successful business owners have failed two to three times before they succeed. It's easier to recover from failure when your young than when your past middle age - get started early!
